Kahil's 2nd Birthday - Ideas and Inspiration (Pics from actual party posted)

My gorgeous son is turning 2 at the end of April, and my husband and I decided to once again do a low-key party for him with just the family.

I think by the time he turns 3, we may go the route of a party with all his friends from school.

For his 1st birthday, we did a little celebration at home, but he was not happy. He was tired, moody and irritable after a day at school, and he didn’t want to pose for pictures, or blow out candles. It was a slightly small disaster.
We decided that we’d put him to bed, and try again the next day.
Kahil was (at this age), obsessed with Mickey Mouse Clubhouse on Disney Junior, so we had a themed cake, once again from Sugar and Spice. My sister got themed serviettes, tableware, a Mickey mouse balloon, and plush toy, and managed to make our little dining room a party palace for my little guy.

He was much better the next day, and we had an awesome time celebrating his first year of life. Here are some pictures below.

This year, we decided on something different. As we are not planning to have any more kids, it is inevitable that Kahil is, and will continue being very spoilt. He is the eldest grandson on both sides of the family, and he is surrounded by so many people who love him. My husband and I decided that Kahil should learn from an early age that it (life, birthdays, etc) is not all about HIM. It’s the risk you take when you have an “only child”. So taking all that into consideration, we decided that we would find a children’s home, and have a party for Kahil, along with the kids there.

We managed to find an HIV Children’s Care facility where 14 children from the age of 2 up until 11 years old live. It is the Thuthuzela Aid Community Centre. We planned that we would bring hot dogs for lunch, and lay a party table with chips, and cold drinks and sweets. There would be cake and we could all sing to Kahil. We’re going to have him hand out the party packs to the kids. I’ve also had an activity book printed for all the kids and am hoping to source some coloured pencils or crayons to go with it as a gift to them. Each book cover has the child’s name printed on it, and a thank you note at the back from Kahil.

At this age, he is now obsessed with Barney, so that’s the theme I decided to go with. See Activity Book covers and labels for party packs below:

I am getting the cake done by the wonderful Gen at Fairytale Occasions – you have NEVER tasted chocolate cake like that in your life! I’ve already got suckers, Fizzers, chips and Smarties for the party packs. Just need little boxes to put them in now. We are also trying to source other things for the kids that they might need. I went with the idea of an activity book, because I figured that the kids must always get stuff they “need” (when they do get stuff), and probably don’t often get something fun, which they would want.

Once we’ve had the party, I will post all the pictures.

As promised, please see some amazing pictures from the actual day. Not only my son, but ALL the kids had a blast. It was a wonderful experience for us all, to be able to give back a little and to have the opportunity to show my son that there are kids out there who have so little compared to him.

The kids at this centre were amazing and so clever and they had all of us in tears as they held hands and said grace before they could dig into the yummy hot dogs we'd brought along for them.

Please see some pictures from that heartwarming day below:

AND, here are the party packs and activity books we printed to go along crayons we had bought for the kids:
